If you're planning a Caribbean vacation, you've probably wondered about sargassum.

It's one of the most common questions I receive from clients:

"Which Sandals Resort is least likely to have seaweed?"

The honest answer is that no Caribbean destination can guarantee you'll never see sargassum. Ocean currents, wind, weather and seasonal conditions all play a role, and beach conditions can change from one week to the next.

However, some Sandals Resorts are located on coastlines that are naturally more protected than others, making them excellent choices if beautiful beaches are high on your priority list.

Having visited many of these resorts myself, here's what I recommend.

This is the fastest way to narrow down your options — based on your travel style, budget, and priorities.

Why Some Beaches Get More Sargassum Than Others

To understand why some Sandals Resorts are less affected, it helps to know where sargassum comes from.

Most of the sargassum that reaches the Caribbean originates in the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt—a massive floating band of seaweed that stretches across the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Ocean currents and trade winds gradually carry it west toward the Caribbean.

As a general rule:

  • East-facing beaches (those exposed to the Atlantic Ocean) are more likely to receive sargassum.
  • South- and southeast-facing beaches can also experience seasonal accumulations depending on wind and ocean currents.
  • West-facing beaches along the Caribbean Sea are often naturally protected by the islands themselves.
  • Sheltered bays, coves, reefs and breakwaters can further reduce the amount of seaweed that reaches shore.

Of course, Mother Nature doesn't always follow the rules. A change in wind direction or weather can quickly change beach conditions, which is why you'll occasionally find a pristine beach during peak sargassum season—or seaweed on a beach that is usually crystal clear.

Sandals Dunn's River & Sandals Royal Plantation

After visiting Jamaica this summer, I was genuinely impressed by the beaches in Ocho Rios.

The water was crystal clear, the beaches were beautifully maintained, and there was virtually no noticeable sargassum during my stay. It honestly exceeded my expectations.

Sandals Dunn's River sits on a beautiful stretch of Jamaica's north coast, while nearby Sandals Royal Plantation features two intimate private coves that feel naturally sheltered.

Although Ocho Rios isn't always the first destination people think of when discussing sargassum, my firsthand experience was exceptional. Combined with the resorts' excellent beach maintenance, I would confidently recommend either resort to travellers who are concerned about beach conditions.

Sandals Negril

Sandals Negril has long been one of Jamaica's standout beach resorts.

Located on famous Seven Mile Beach, it faces west toward the Caribbean Sea rather than directly into the Atlantic. That geography helps reduce the likelihood of significant sargassum compared to many eastern Caribbean beaches.

The result is one of the Caribbean's best stretches of soft sand and calm, swimmable water.

Sandals Saint Vincent

One of the reasons I love Sandals Saint Vincent is its incredible location.

The resort sits within a secluded west-facing bay surrounded by lush mountains, creating a naturally sheltered environment that helps keep the water calm and clear throughout much of the year.

It's easily one of the most spectacular beach settings in the Sandals collection.

The Sandals Resorts in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is another destination that benefits from geography.

All three Sandals Resorts—

  • Sandals Grande St. Lucian
  • Sandals Halcyon
  • Sandals Regency La Toc

are located along the island's Caribbean (west) coast rather than its Atlantic side.

That means they're naturally more sheltered from the currents that carry most of the Caribbean's sargassum, making Saint Lucia one of my favourite recommendations for beach lovers.

Sandals Grenada

Sandals Grenada is located on Pink Gin Beach along the island's southwest coast.

While Grenada can occasionally experience seasonal sargassum, this part of the island is generally more protected than beaches facing directly toward the Atlantic.

The resort's calm water and beautiful beach continue to make it a fantastic choice for couples.

Sandals Grande Antigua

Sandals Grande Antigua sits on Dickenson Bay, one of Antigua's most famous beaches.

Its location on the island's northwest coast generally provides more protection than many of Antigua's eastern beaches, although seasonal conditions can still vary throughout the year.

Sandals Royal Bahamian

The Bahamas sits farther north than many Caribbean islands and generally experiences less sargassum overall.

Sandals Royal Bahamian offers gorgeous turquoise water and access to its private offshore island, making it another excellent option for travellers who prioritize the beach.

While I wouldn't automatically rank it above my favourite resorts in Jamaica or Saint Vincent, it's certainly one of the Sandals Resorts where beach conditions are often excellent.

Does Sandals Remove Sargassum?

Yes.

Whenever seaweed washes ashore, Sandals teams work hard to remove it as quickly as possible.

Beaches are groomed daily, and many resorts have dedicated grounds crews working throughout the day to keep the shoreline looking its best. At resorts with sheltered bays, reefs or breakwaters, these natural features can also help minimize accumulation.

My Recommendations

If avoiding sargassum is one of your biggest priorities, I recommend choosing a resort with naturally protected geography rather than focusing on the idea that one destination is "seaweed-free."

Based on both geography and my own recent experiences, these are the Sandals Resorts I'd recommend with confidence:

  • Sandals Dunn's River
  • Sandals Royal Plantation
  • Sandals Negril
  • Sandals Saint Vincent
  • Sandals Grande St. Lucian
  • Sandals Halcyon
  • Sandals Regency La Toc
  • Sandals Grenada
  • Sandals Grande Antigua
  • Sandals Royal Bahamian

Every year is a little different, and nature is wonderfully unpredictable. But choosing a resort on a sheltered coastline can significantly improve your chances of enjoying those crystal-clear Caribbean waters we all dream about.

If you're planning a Sandals vacation and aren't sure which resort is the best fit, I'd be happy to help. Having personally visited many of these resorts, I can recommend the destination that best matches your travel style, priorities and the beach experience you're hoping for.
