Barbados TRAVEL GUIDE
Barbados is an island I recommend when you want a beautiful Caribbean vacation with plenty to do beyond the resort.
There are gorgeous beaches, excellent restaurants and lots of ways to experience the island, from Friday night at Oistins to rum tasting at Mount Gay and exploring the Animal Flower Cave.
One of the things I love most about Barbados is how easy it is to get around. Public transport is a great option for exploring, and you don’t have to book an organized excursion every time you want to leave your hotel.
It’s particularly well suited to couples, food lovers and travellers who want the convenience of a resort stay with the freedom to get out and discover somewhere new.

Barbados has plenty to offer beach lovers, but it’s the variety of things to do that makes it such a great vacation destination.
You can spend the morning by the water, head out for lunch and explore a different part of the island in the afternoon. For travellers who enjoy a little independence, being able to get around easily is a big part of the appeal.
You can comfortably fill a week here, but there’s no need to plan something for every day. Barbados gives you plenty of choice when you feel like heading out and a beautiful setting when you feel like staying put.

- You enjoy local food, rum tastings and lively evenings out

- You want an all-inclusive vacation but still plan to experience the island

- You enjoy mixing relaxed resort days with sightseeing
If your ideal vacation centres on a secluded resort with very little interest in exploring, I’d want to compare Barbados with a few other islands before choosing your stay.
THE PERFECT WEEK
HOW I’D SPEND 7 DAYS IN BARBADOS
My ideal Barbados itinerary leaves plenty of time for the beach while making room for a few island favourites.
I’d arrange the days around your arrival date so Oistins falls on Friday, then build the rest of the week around how much exploring you want to do.
DAY 1 — ARRIVE + SETTLE IN
Check in, unpack and get acquainted with your resort. Find your favourite spot for a drink and ease into vacation.
DAY 2 — BEACH DAY
Give yourself a full day to enjoy where you’re staying. Swim, relax, have a long lunch and leave the schedule open.
DAY 3 — MOUNT GAY RUM TASTING
Book a tasting at the Mount Gay Visitor Centre for an introduction to the brand’s history and rums. It’s a great way to add a little local flavour to your week.
DAY 4 — ANIMAL FLOWER CAVE + THE NORTH COAST
Head north to Animal Flower Cave for dramatic coastal scenery and a guided cave visit. Cave access depends on the sea, so check before setting out.
DAY 5 — EXPLORE AT YOUR OWN PACE
Head to Bathsheba Beach, into Bridgetown or take a catamaran out to swim with sea turtles. This is a good day to take advantage of Barbados’ public transport, depending on where you’re staying and where you want to go.
DAY 6 — OISTINS FISH FRY
Keep the daytime relaxed before heading to Oistins for dinner, music and a lively evening. Schedule this outing for Friday night, regardless of where it falls in your vacation.
DAY 7 — ONE LAST BEACH DAY
Leave your final full day mostly open. Enjoy your resort, get back in the water and make time for one more leisurely meal.
JEN’S TIP
Leave room in your Barbados vacation to explore. Public transport is one of the things I love about the island, and it makes heading out feel easy. For a longer day of sightseeing, such as a visit to Animal Flower Cave, I’d consider arranging a driver so you can enjoy the stops along the way.
