Sandals Grande Antigua Resort Guide

Sandals Grande Antigua is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort located on beautiful Dickenson Bay in St. John’s, Antigua. Known for its long stretch of white-sand beach, lush tropical gardens and romantic atmosphere, it’s one of my favourite Sandals Resorts for honeymoons, anniversaries and couples who want a relaxed Caribbean escape.

The resort is divided into two distinct areas: the Caribbean Beachfront Village, with tropical gardens, low-rise buildings and a more traditional Caribbean feel, and the Mediterranean Oceanview Village, with larger buildings, spacious suites and a grander resort atmosphere.

Who Is Sandals Grande Antigua Best For?

I recommend Sandals Grande Antigua for:

  • Honeymooners and anniversary couples
  • Couples who consider the beach one of the most important parts of their vacation
  • Travellers who love lush, established tropical landscaping
  • Couples looking for a romantic and relaxed atmosphere
  • Travellers who prefer a classic Caribbean resort over an ultra-modern design
  • Couples who want a resort with plenty of space to relax

Sandals Grande Antigua may not be my first recommendation if you want a newer, contemporary resort, a major nightlife scene or constant entertainment. There are other Sandals Resorts that are better suited to those priorities.

Sandals Grande Antigua Resort Highlights

Sandals Grande Antigua sits directly on Dickenson Bay and combines a traditional Caribbean resort setting with a larger Mediterranean-inspired village.

The Caribbean Beachfront Village is where you’ll find winding pathways, mature tropical gardens and accommodations close to the beach. It has the more intimate, quintessentially Caribbean atmosphere of the two villages.

The Mediterranean Oceanview Village feels larger and grander, with its impressive pool, Mediterranean architecture and a selection of spacious Club and Butler suites.

Across the resort, guests have access to 11 restaurants, 7 bars, 6 pools and 6 whirlpools, along with included land and water activities.

JEN’S TIP

Choose the Caribbean Beachfront Village for tropical character and easier beach access. Choose the Mediterranean Village if a larger pool, grander atmosphere and spacious suites matter more.

Best Rooms at Sandals Grande Antigua

Choosing the right room at Sandals Grande Antigua matters because room location can significantly change your experience.

The Caribbean and Mediterranean villages have different layouts, styles and proximity to the beach, pools and restaurants. I recommend choosing based on how you plan to spend your vacation rather than simply selecting the highest room category within your budget.

Best for Beach Lovers

If the beach is the reason you’re choosing this resort, I’d strongly consider staying in the Caribbean Beachfront Village. Some of the beachfront Club Level rooms put you just steps from the sand and offer beautiful views.

Is Butler Service Worth It at Sandals Grande Antigua?

I’m more likely to recommend a Butler suite at Sandals Grande Antigua if:

  • You’re celebrating a honeymoon or milestone anniversary
  • You want a private pool or one-bedroom suite
  • You value personalized service throughout your stay
  • You want assistance with dining arrangements and your daily resort routine
  • The room itself is an important part of your vacation experience

Not every couple needs Butler service. Sometimes I’d rather put your budget toward a better room location or a longer stay.

MY TAKE

WHAT IS SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA REALLY LIKE?

Sandals Grande Antigua has a relaxed, established and romantic feel.

The beach is the standout feature. Dickenson Bay is long and beautiful, making this a particularly strong choice for couples who envision spending a significant amount of their vacation on the sand or in the Caribbean Sea.

The Caribbean Village is my pick for travellers who want tropical gardens and classic Caribbean character. The Mediterranean Village is larger and has rooms with great views of the ocean, the resort’s impressive pool and Mediterranean-inspired architecture.

One important consideration is that Sandals Grande Antigua is not one of the newest Sandals Resorts. Some accommodations have a more traditional style than you’ll find at newer resorts such as Sandals Royal Curaçao or Sandals Dunn’s River.

For the right traveller, that isn’t necessarily a drawback. The established landscaping and traditional Caribbean atmosphere are part of the resort’s charm. But if contemporary room design is one of your top priorities, I would compare it carefully with some of the newer Sandals properties before booking.

THE BEACH

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SANDALS BEACHES

Sandals Grande Antigua sits directly on Dickenson Bay, one of Antigua’s best-known beaches. Expect a long stretch of soft white sand, beautiful Caribbean water and plenty of room for swimming, relaxing and water sports. If a beautiful Caribbean beach is your number-one priority, this is almost always one of the Sandals resorts I consider.

Good to know: Beaches in Antigua are public, including Dickenson Bay, so the atmosphere can feel different from a completely secluded resort beach.

EAT & DRINK

DINING AT SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA

With 11 restaurants, there’s plenty of variety for a seven-night stay. These are a few of the dining experiences I’d have on my list. Explore all restaurants at Sandals Grande Antigua.

JEN’S TIP

Make time for at least one dinner or drink close to the beach around sunset. The setting is part of the experience here.
