As a travel advisor, I’m fortunate to visit some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful resorts. While every Sandals property has its own personality, my recent stay at Sandals Dunn’s River in Jamaica left me genuinely surprised in all the best ways.
Of course, I expected luxury accommodations, great dining, and exceptional service. But it was the unexpected moments—the little details—that made this resort stand out.
Here are the things that surprised me most.
This is the fastest way to narrow down your options — based on your travel style, budget, and priorities.
Not Sure Which Sandals Resort Is Right for You?
Take the 2-minute quiz and get matched with your perfect resort.
This insider guide breaks down Luxury, Club, and Butler levels so you can choose the right experience — not just the most expensive one.
The Water Is Even More Beautiful Than the Photos
You’ve probably seen the marketing photos of Sandals Dunn’s River, but nothing prepares you for seeing that water in person.
The ocean is an incredible shade of turquoise that almost doesn’t look real. During my stay, I even spotted a baby stingray swimming near the shoreline—a magical reminder that you’re surrounded by Jamaica’s vibrant marine life.
If you’re dreaming of that postcard-perfect Caribbean water, this resort absolutely delivers.

The Coffee Shop Is a Hidden Gem
I’m picky about iced coffee, so I wasn’t expecting to be impressed.
I was wrong.
The coffee shop serves delicious handcrafted iced coffee that’s made using an intensive brewing process that takes more than 24 hours on property. You can genuinely taste the difference.
It quickly became one of my favourite morning stops.

The Landscaping Is Stunning
One thing that stood out immediately was how meticulously maintained the grounds are.
Every pathway is lined with lush tropical plants, colourful flowers, mature palms, and perfectly manicured gardens. It’s clear that a tremendous amount of investment goes into maintaining the resort’s landscaping, and it creates an incredibly relaxing atmosphere.
Everywhere you look feels like a photo opportunity.

The Included Water Sports Are Incredible
Many people don’t realize just how much is included at Sandals Dunn’s River.
Beyond unlimited dining and premium drinks, guests can enjoy:
- Snorkeling
- Certified scuba diving (for certified divers)
- Paddleboarding
- Hobie Cat sailing
- Glass-bottom boat rides
- Tubing
- Kayaking and more
If you enjoy being on the water, you could easily fill every day with a different activity—without paying extra.

The Jerk Shack Has Daily Jamaican Specials
Every Sandals resort has its own take on the famous Jerk Shack, but Dunn’s River does something a little different.
Along with the classic jerk chicken and pork, the chefs feature rotating daily Jamaican specialties, giving guests the opportunity to try authentic local dishes throughout their stay.
It’s one of the best places on the resort to experience the flavours of Jamaica.

Even the Entry-Level Rooms Include Room Service
This one surprised me.
At most Sandals resorts, room service is reserved for Club and Butler level accommodations.
At Sandals Dunn’s River, even the entry-level Luxury rooms include room service.
That’s an exceptional value and a feature you won’t find at most other Sandals properties.

There’s So Much More Than Just the Beach
Whether you’re competitive, creative, or simply looking to try something new, there’s plenty happening beyond the pool.
During my stay I noticed guests enjoying:
- Pickleball on dedicated courts
- Pottery classes
- Sip-and-paint experiences
- Arts and crafts activities
- Fitness classes
- Live entertainment throughout the day and evening
It’s one of the more activity-filled Sandals resorts without ever feeling crowded.

There’s a Hidden Rooftop Bar
One of my favourite discoveries was Ocarina.
Tucked away above the resort, this beautiful rooftop bar offers sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea and feels like a secret escape from the rest of the property.
It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun begin to set.

The Spa Is Worth Visiting—Even Without a Treatment
One of the biggest surprises?
The incredible spa facilities.
Guests can enjoy the hydrotherapy amenities—including hot and cold plunge pools and a steam room—even if they haven’t booked a spa treatment.
It’s a peaceful retreat that’s perfect after a day in the sun.

The Fitness Centre Has One of the Best Views on the Resort
Even if working out isn’t usually part of your vacation, the fitness centre might change your mind.
The resort features a spacious, modern gym equipped with everything from cardio machines and free weights to strength-training equipment. What makes it truly special, though, is the panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea.
Instead of staring at a wall while you exercise, you’re treated to sweeping ocean views that make even a morning workout feel like part of the vacation.

The Dunn's Rum Club Is Worth Visiting Again and Again
One of my favourite discoveries at Sandals Dunn's River was the Dunn's Rum Club. Home to more than 30 varieties of Caribbean rum, it's the perfect place to sample local flavours, enjoy a handcrafted cocktail, or try a rum flight.
What truly won me over, though, were the appetizers. They were absolutely delicious and made the Rum Club the perfect spot to relax before dinner—or simply stop in for a casual bite and a drink. I found myself returning more than once during my stay.
Hint: Try the pork belly sliders!

You Get Access to Two Resorts
One of the biggest perks of staying at Sandals Dunn’s River is the ability to visit nearby Sandals Ochi.
Thanks to exchange privileges, you can enjoy restaurants, bars, entertainment, and amenities at both resorts, giving you even more variety throughout your vacation.
It’s almost like getting two vacations in one.

My Final Thoughts
I arrived expecting a beautiful luxury resort.
I left realizing that Sandals Dunn’s River offers so much more than I anticipated.
From the unbelievable turquoise water and authentic Jamaican dining to the incredible included activities, thoughtful amenities, and hidden surprises around every corner, it’s quickly become one of my favourite Sandals resorts.
If you’re considering a Jamaica vacation and wondering whether Sandals Dunn’s River is worth it, my answer is simple: absolutely.
Having experienced it firsthand, I’d be happy to help you decide whether it’s the right Sandals resort for your next getaway—and make sure you book the room category that’s the best fit for your vacation style and budget.
