Best Beach
Winner: Sandals Negril
If your dream vacation revolves around spending every day on one of the Caribbean's most famous beaches, Sandals Negril has the advantage.
Located directly on Seven Mile Beach, you'll find soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and a long stretch of shoreline that's perfect for morning walks. The water stays shallow for quite a distance, making it ideal for swimming.
Sandals Dunn's River also has a beautiful beach with incredibly clear water—I was honestly blown away by just how turquoise it was, even more vibrant than the photos. During my stay, I even spotted a baby stingray swimming near the shoreline.
The beach at Dunn's River is smaller and feels more intimate, while Negril offers that classic "endless Caribbean beach" experience.
Best Rooms
Winner: Sandals Dunn's River
This one isn't particularly close.
Sandals Dunn's River is one of Sandals' newest resorts, and it shows throughout the accommodations.
The resort features spectacular SkyPool Suites, Coyaba Sky Rondovals with private pools, Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Suites, and beautifully designed Butler Villas with contemporary finishes and thoughtful technology throughout.
The rooms feel bright, modern, and luxurious without feeling overdone.
Sandals Negril offers comfortable accommodations, but many room categories are older in design despite renovations over the years.
If having a beautiful room is a major part of your vacation, Dunn's River stands out.
Best Food
Winner: Sandals Dunn's River
Both resorts offer excellent dining, but Dunn's River delivers one of the strongest restaurant collections across the entire Sandals brand.
During my stay, I was genuinely impressed by both the quality and variety.
Standout favourites included:
- Edessa, serving outstanding Greek cuisine.
- Banyu, offering excellent Asian fusion dishes.
- Cascata, the elegant Italian restaurant.
- Zuka for Latin-inspired flavours.
- Dunn's Rum Club, where I loved sampling from more than 30 premium rums while enjoying delicious small plates overlooking the ocean.
- Blum Coffee Shop, which serves one of the best iced coffees I've had at any all-inclusive resort.
Negril has excellent restaurants as well—including Brava, Sundowner and Barefoot by the Sea—but Dunn's River feels more innovative and elevated overall.
Pools
Winner: Sandals Dunn's River
If you're someone who enjoys spending time by the pool, Dunn's River offers more variety.
There are multiple distinct pool experiences throughout the resort, including quieter relaxation pools, lively social pools, swim-up bars, and several incredible private pool accommodations.
The landscaping is stunning, with lush tropical gardens and flowers surrounding many of the pool areas, making the entire resort feel incredibly polished.
Sandals Negril has beautiful pools as well, but the overall design feels more traditional.
Entertainment
Winner: Sandals Dunn's River (slight edge)
Entertainment is excellent at both resorts, but Dunn's River has quickly developed an energetic evening atmosphere.
The Dunn's Rum Club is a destination in itself, with live music, ocean views, and an impressive rum collection.
The nightly entertainment felt polished and lively without ever becoming overwhelming.
Negril tends to have a slightly more laid-back vibe overall, which many returning guests love.
If you enjoy evenings with live music and a bit more energy, Dunn's River gets my vote.
Best for Honeymooners
Winner: Sandals Dunn's River
Both resorts are incredibly romantic, but they appeal to different types of couples.
Dunn's River feels luxurious, modern, and sophisticated. The stunning suites, elegant restaurants, beautiful landscaping, and incredible service make it feel especially special for honeymooners celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Negril offers a more relaxed, barefoot luxury atmosphere. Couples who picture long beach walks, spectacular sunsets, and a slower pace may prefer it.
For most honeymoon couples looking for a true luxury experience, I'd recommend Dunn's River.
Best for Active Couples
Winner: Sandals Negril
If you like to stay active while you're away, Sandals Negril has plenty to offer.
The resort features extensive included water sports, from snorkelling and scuba diving to paddleboarding, sailing, kayaking, and tubing. That being said, Sandals Dunn's River also has a wide variety of water sports an impressive oceanfront fitness centre with panoramic views that easily ranks among the best gyms I've seen at any all-inclusive resort.
My Recommendation
After experiencing Sandals Dunn's River firsthand, it's become one of my favourite Sandals resorts.
The combination of contemporary accommodations, exceptional restaurants, beautiful pools, lush tropical landscaping, outstanding service, and some of the most vibrant turquoise water I've ever seen creates a resort that feels truly special.
That said, Sandals Negril continues to be an outstanding choice for travellers who value spending their days on one of Jamaica's best beaches and love a relaxed, beachfront atmosphere.
Choose Sandals Dunn's River if you:
- Love modern luxury.
- Want the newest accommodations.
- Consider food an important part of your vacation.
- Enjoy multiple pool options.
- Want a more active resort experience.
- Are celebrating a honeymoon or milestone anniversary.
Choose Sandals Negril if you:
- Dream of Seven Mile Beach.
- Love long walks on the sand.
- Prefer a more relaxed pace.
- Want a classic Jamaican beach vacation.
No matter which you choose, you're getting an exceptional all-inclusive vacation. It simply comes down to whether you prioritize a world-famous beach or one of Sandals' newest and most innovative resort experiences.
