If you are trying to decide between Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Curaçao, you are comparing two excellent Sandals resorts — but two very different Caribbean vacations.
Both offer beautiful pools, plenty of dining, modern room options and the all-inclusive experience Sandals is known for. But the overall feel, beach, island experience and even the type of traveller I would send to each resort are quite different.
I have visited both Barbados and Curaçao, and this is a comparison I find particularly useful because neither resort is necessarily “better.” The better choice really comes down to how you like to vacation.

Sandals Barbados vs. Sandals Royal Curaçao at a Glance

- Incredible pools and beautiful resort design
- A quieter, more sophisticated atmosphere
- A destination that feels different from the traditional Caribbean
- More emphasis on getting off resort and exploring
- Willemstad, beaches, restaurants and Curaçao's Dutch-Caribbean culture
For me, the biggest difference is this: Sandals Barbados is the better choice if the resort itself is a major part of your entertainment. Sandals Royal Curaçao is particularly appealing if you want a beautiful resort combined with a destination worth exploring.
The Resort Experience
One of the biggest advantages of Sandals Barbados is that you essentially get two resorts for the price of one.
Sandals Barbados sits directly beside Sandals Royal Barbados, and guests can move freely between them. There isn't really a noticeable boundary between the two properties, so I tend to think of them as one large Sandals complex.
That gives you an enormous amount of choice.
You can spend your morning at one pool, have lunch on the other side of the property, head back to the beach for the afternoon and choose from a huge selection of restaurants for dinner.
If you are someone who worries about getting bored at an all-inclusive resort, Barbados is a very strong choice.
Sandals Royal Curaçao feels completely different.
The resort is expansive, beautifully landscaped and contemporary, but it doesn't have the same busy resort-complex feeling as Barbados. There is more breathing room, and certain areas can feel wonderfully peaceful.
The architecture also takes advantage of the landscape. Rather than everything being concentrated around one central beachfront area, the resort stretches across the property with different pools, accommodation areas and viewpoints.
It feels polished, modern and distinctly Curaçao.
Which Has the Better Beach?
This is one of the most important differences between these two resorts.
If the beach is one of your highest priorities, I would generally give the advantage to Sandals Barbados.
The resort sits on a beautiful stretch of Caribbean coastline with turquoise water and a beach that feels much more like the classic Caribbean experience many travellers picture when booking Sandals.
Sandals Royal Curaçao has a protected beach area along Spanish Water. It's attractive and calm, and the surrounding landscape is beautiful, but it isn't the sweeping Caribbean beach experience some guests expect.
That doesn't mean Curaçao isn't a beach destination.
Quite the opposite.
Curaçao has some spectacular beaches — but many of the island's best beaches are places you explore away from the resort.
That's an important distinction.
If you want to walk out of your room, spend most of the day on the resort beach and repeat that routine for a week, Barbados may be the better fit.
If you're happy to have a beautiful pool day at the resort and then head out to discover Curaçao's coves and beaches, Royal Curaçao becomes much more compelling.
The Pools
This category goes to Sandals Royal Curaçao for me.
The resort's double-decker infinity pool is one of its defining features, with gorgeous views across the landscape toward Spanish Water.
It creates that immediate “wow” factor when you arrive.
There are also other pools around the resort, including quieter options depending on where you're staying.
Barbados certainly isn't lacking in pools — particularly when you include Royal Barbados next door — and you'll have plenty of choice between lively and quieter areas.
But if beautiful pool design and a sophisticated poolside atmosphere are high on your wish list, Curaçao has the edge.
Dining: Which Resort Has Better Restaurants?
This one is difficult because both are fantastic dining resorts.
The major advantage in Barbados is sheer variety.
Because you have access to the restaurants at both Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados, you can stay for a week and have a completely different dining experience every night.
For food-focused travellers who love having lots of options without leaving the resort, that's a huge selling point.
Royal Curaçao, however, introduced some interesting concepts that make dining feel more connected to the destination.
One of my favourite features is the Island Inclusive dining program available to qualifying Butler-level guests. Instead of keeping every meal inside the Sandals bubble, eligible guests can dine at participating local restaurants in Curaçao.
I love the philosophy behind this.
Curaçao is a destination where I genuinely want my clients to get off the resort, see Willemstad and experience some of the island's local restaurants and culture.
So while Barbados wins on quantity and resort dining variety, Curaçao gets points for incorporating the destination itself into the experience.
Rooms and Suites
If contemporary room design matters to you, Sandals Royal Curaçao has an advantage.
As one of the newer Sandals resorts, many of its accommodations reflect the newer direction of the brand: cleaner lines, modern finishes and some spectacular higher-end categories.
The Kurason Island Poolside Butler Bungalows are particularly unique. Instead of being traditional overwater bungalows, these suites sit around a heart-shaped pool and create a private enclave within the resort.
There are also excellent swim-up and walkout options throughout the property.
Barbados offers a much broader range of accommodations because you're effectively choosing between two resorts.
You'll find everything from more approachable Luxury and Club Level rooms to swim-up suites and some impressive Butler Elite categories at Royal Barbados.
My advice here is not to choose solely based on resort.
At both properties, room category can significantly change your experience, so this is one area where working backwards from your budget and priorities is particularly helpful.
Atmosphere and Nightlife
Barbados generally feels livelier.
With two resorts sharing amenities, there are simply more people moving around and more places to go.
If you enjoy meeting other couples, grabbing drinks after dinner, finding some entertainment and having a bit of energy around you, Barbados is likely to appeal.
Royal Curaçao can still be social, particularly around the main pool, but overall I find the atmosphere more relaxed and sophisticated.
It's a resort where I can easily imagine spending an afternoon by the infinity pool, having cocktails before dinner and enjoying a slower evening.
For honeymooners and couples who want a romantic trip without feeling isolated, Curaçao strikes a nice balance.
Getting Off the Resort
This is where Curaçao really shines.
I don't recommend travelling all the way to Curaçao and never leaving Sandals Royal Curaçao.
Willemstad is colourful, historic and genuinely fun to explore. The island has excellent beaches, restaurants, snorkelling and diving, and a landscape that feels noticeably different from many other Caribbean islands.
This is one of the reasons I love Curaçao for travellers who say:
"We love Sandals, but we also want to actually experience the destination."
Barbados is absolutely worth exploring too. Bridgetown, Oistins, the west coast, rum distilleries and the island's food scene can easily fill several days.
But Curaçao feels especially suited to travellers who want a resort-and-explore vacation rather than a resort-only vacation.
Sandals Barbados Is Best For...
I tend to recommend Sandals Barbados for couples who want a classic Caribbean all-inclusive vacation with lots of choice.
It's particularly good for:
- First-time Sandals guests
- Couples who prioritize the beach
- Foodies who want plenty of restaurants
- Travellers who like a livelier resort
- Couples who want lots to do without leaving the property
- Groups travelling together
- Guests who like having multiple pools, bars and entertainment areas to choose from
The two-resort setup is a major advantage. You can explore for several days before you feel like you've seen everything.
Sandals Royal Curaçao Is Best For...
I tend to recommend Sandals Royal Curaçao for couples who appreciate design, pools, destination and experience.
It's particularly good for:
- Couples who have already visited other Sandals resorts
- Honeymooners
- Travellers who love beautiful pools
- Couples who prefer a slightly more sophisticated atmosphere
- Travellers who want to explore beyond the resort
- Foodies interested in local dining
- Divers and snorkellers
- Couples looking for a Caribbean destination that feels a little different
It's also one of my favourite Sandals choices for clients who tell me they aren't necessarily “all-inclusive people.”
Why?
Because Curaçao makes it very easy to combine the convenience of Sandals with a more independent island vacation.
So, Which Would I Choose?
For a classic beach vacation with tons of restaurants, activity and variety, I'd choose Sandals Barbados.
For a more contemporary resort with spectacular pools and an island I'm excited to explore, I'd choose Sandals Royal Curaçao.
And personally, Curaçao is the destination I find more interesting outside the resort.
That's really the deciding factor between these two.
If your idea of a perfect Sandals vacation is spending seven days barefoot between the beach, pool, restaurants and bars, Barbados is hard to beat.
If your perfect vacation involves a gorgeous resort as your home base, but you also want to wander colourful Willemstad, visit local beaches, eat off property and experience somewhere that feels distinctly different, I would lean toward Royal Curaçao.
