One of the questions I see asked most often in Sandals Facebook groups is:

“How’s the beach at Sandals Dunn’s River?”

Having recently stayed at the resort myself, I can confidently say this:

It’s much better than many people expect.

In fact, it was one of the biggest surprises of my stay.

The Quick Answer

If you’re looking for:

• Calm, swimmable water
• Beautiful shades of turquoise
• Soft sand
• Great snorkeling opportunities
• Plenty of loungers

…you’re probably going to love it.

Is it the largest beach in Jamaica?

No.

Is it one of my favourite beaches at a Sandals resort?

Absolutely.

The Water Is Stunning

The first thing that caught my attention was the colour.

The water has that incredible Caribbean blue that almost doesn’t look real.

On sunny days, the different shades of turquoise are absolutely gorgeous, and because the beach is tucked into a protected bay, the water stays relatively calm.

It’s perfect for swimming or simply floating while enjoying the view.

Better Than the Photos

One thing I noticed before visiting was that online photos don’t really do the beach justice.

In person, it feels much larger than I expected.

The resort has done an excellent job designing the beachfront with plenty of seating, shaded areas, and easy access to the water.

Even when the resort is busy, it doesn’t feel overcrowded.

What About Sea Grass?

This is another common question.

Like virtually every beach in the Caribbean, sea grass can occasionally wash ashore, particularly depending on winds and currents.

During my stay, I found the beach to be very clean and well maintained.

There were a few natural grassy patches in the water in certain areas, but they were easy to avoid and didn’t affect our enjoyment at all.

The resort staff work hard every morning to keep the beach looking its best.

Great for Swimming

If you’re someone who actually enjoys spending time in the ocean—not just looking at it—this beach is excellent.

The water is:

• Warm
• Clear
• Calm most days
• Easy to enter
• Great for floating

I spent quite a bit of time in the water during my stay.

Snorkeling Is a Hidden Bonus

One thing many people don’t realize is that there’s surprisingly good snorkeling just offshore.

You won’t find a massive reef directly off the beach, but there are plenty of fish, clear water, and interesting areas to explore.

If you enjoy snorkeling, it’s definitely worth bringing a mask or joining one of the included snorkeling excursions.

My Verdict

Before visiting, I wasn’t sure what to expect after reading mixed reviews online.

After spending several days there, I can honestly say the beach exceeded my expectations.

Combined with the incredible pools, excellent dining, beautiful landscaping, and luxurious accommodations, it’s one of my favourite Sandals resorts in Jamaica.

Would I book Sandals Dunn’s River because of the beach alone?

Probably not.

Would I book it because it offers an outstanding overall luxury experience and a beach that’s far better than many people give it credit for?

Without hesitation.

My Advice

Don’t overlook Sandals Dunn’s River because of comments you’ve read online. The beach may not be Jamaica’s longest, but it’s beautiful, swimmable, and one of the resort’s most underrated features. If you’re looking for a modern luxury resort with excellent dining, gorgeous pools, and a beach you’ll actually enjoy spending time on, it deserves to be high on your shortlist.
