Sandals Grande Antigua Review: The Honest Pros and Cons You Need to Know
Sandals Grande Antigua is one of those resorts that inspires an unusually loyal following. Guests return year after year, honeymooners remember it fondly decades later, and its beach is regularly described as one of the best in the entire Sandals collection.
But is Sandals Grande Antigua perfect? No—and choosing the right room and the right location within the resort can make a significant difference to your experience.
Located on beautiful Dickenson Bay, Sandals Grande Antigua combines a lush, established Caribbean resort with a newer, more expansive Mediterranean-style village. The result is a large adults-only resort offering two distinctly different atmospheres.
Here is an honest look at the good, the not-so-good and what you need to understand before booking Sandals Grande Antigua.
The best thing about Sandals Grande Antigua: the beach
Let’s begin with the resort’s biggest selling point: Dickenson Bay.
This long stretch of soft white sand and calm turquoise water is genuinely beautiful. If your idea of a Caribbean vacation involves spending most of the day swimming, walking the shoreline or relaxing with your toes in the sand, Sandals Grande Antigua deserves serious consideration.
The water is generally calm and inviting, making the beach well suited to swimming and included water sports. The western-facing location also delivers some memorable Caribbean sunsets.
Dickenson Bay is a public beach, as are all beaches in Antigua. You may encounter local vendors and excursion operators, particularly along the busier sections of the shoreline. Many guests enjoy the activity and local atmosphere, but travellers expecting a completely private resort beach should know this before arriving.
For dedicated beach lovers, however, this is easily one of the strongest beaches available at a Sandals resort.
Caribbean Village vs. Mediterranean Village
Sandals Grande Antigua is divided into two main sections: the Caribbean Grove and the Mediterranean Oceanview Village. Although they belong to the same resort, they offer noticeably different experiences.
The Caribbean Grove
The Caribbean side is the resort’s more established, tropical section. Its low-rise buildings are surrounded by mature gardens, winding pathways and smaller pools.
This is generally the better choice if you want:
- A lush and intimate Caribbean atmosphere
- Easier access to the beach
- Low-rise accommodations
- Quieter pools and garden areas
- A room that feels integrated into the natural landscape
Some of the resort’s most appealing beachfront and walkout accommodations are found here. Certain rooms place you only steps from the sand, making this side particularly attractive for guests who prioritize location over having the newest room design.
The trade-off is that room interiors vary. Some categories have been updated, while others can feel more traditional or dated compared with newer Sandals resorts. This makes careful room selection especially important.
The Mediterranean Oceanview Village
The Mediterranean side is grander, livelier and more contemporary in scale. It features larger buildings, spacious suites and the resort’s expansive main pool.
This side may suit you better if you want:
- A large, energetic pool scene
- Spacious bathrooms and suites
- Elevated views across the resort
- Convenient access to several restaurants
- Butler suites with private pools
- A more dramatic, resort-style atmosphere
The Mediterranean buildings sit farther back from the shoreline. Upper-floor rooms can provide lovely views over the pool, gardens and Dickenson Bay, but an “ocean-view” room here does not necessarily mean that the ocean will feel close.
You may see the water beautifully from your balcony while still being a considerable distance from the beach.
Can you book a balcony with an ocean view?
Yes, Sandals Grande Antigua offers several room categories with balconies or patios and ocean views. The important question is what kind of ocean view you are picturing.
A Mediterranean Oceanview suite can offer a broad, elevated view that includes the main pool, tropical landscaping and Dickenson Bay in the distance. These rooms are often spacious, but some balconies are smaller than guests anticipate.
If you want to sit on your balcony and feel genuinely close to the sea, a beachfront room in the Caribbean Grove may be a better match. Some Caribbean-side accommodations overlook the beach or place you within a few steps of it.
Do not choose solely based on the words “ocean view.” At this resort, the building, floor, orientation and distance from the shoreline matter just as much as the official view category.
This is an excellent example of why working with someone who understands the resort map and individual room categories can prevent an expensive disappointment.
The pools and overall atmosphere
Sandals Grande Antigua offers six pools and six whirlpools, giving couples several different ways to spend the day.
The Mediterranean Village is home to the resort’s largest and liveliest pool. This is where you are most likely to find music, activities and an energetic social atmosphere.
The smaller pools throughout the Caribbean side tend to feel calmer and more secluded. Couples who prefer a quiet afternoon can usually find a peaceful spot away from the main activity.
This balance is one of the resort’s strengths. You can participate in the livelier side of the resort when you want it without necessarily spending your entire vacation in the middle of the action.
Dining at Sandals Grande Antigua
The resort currently offers 11 included restaurants and seven bars, with options ranging from Caribbean cuisine and seafood to Italian favourites, sushi and Japanese teppanyaki.
Among the choices are Eleanor’s for Caribbean flavours, Kimonos for a lively teppanyaki experience and Mario’s for Italian dishes. There are also casual options for relaxed lunches and snacks near the water.
As with many established all-inclusive resorts, individual dining experiences can vary. The advantage here is the number of choices available over a seven-night stay.
Restaurant locations are spread across the property, so guests staying at either end of the resort should expect some walking. Reservations may also be required for select dining experiences.
What is included?
A stay at Sandals Grande Antigua includes considerably more than accommodations and meals. Current inclusions feature:
- Dining at 11 restaurants
- Unlimited premium spirits and seven bars
- In-room minibar
- Six pools and six whirlpools
- Snorkelling, paddleboards, kayaks and Hobie Cats
- Scuba diving for certified divers
- Pickleball and other land activities
- Daytime and evening entertainment
- Resort-wide Wi-Fi
- Round-trip airport transfers
- Taxes and most gratuities
Butler gratuities, spa treatments, private transfers, excursions and other optional experiences are additional.
The resort is approximately 10 to 20 minutes from V.C. Bird International Airport, depending on traffic and the transfer vehicle. That short journey is a major advantage, especially when compared with Caribbean resorts requiring a lengthy drive after arrival.
The honest drawbacks
No Sandals Grande Antigua review would be complete without discussing its weaknesses.
Some areas feel dated
The most frequent criticism is that parts of the resort are showing their age. This is particularly noticeable in certain older room categories and common areas.
The lush gardens and established landscaping create plenty of charm, but travellers who want a consistently sleek, newly built resort may prefer one of the newer Sandals properties.
This does not mean every room is outdated. It means the differences between room categories can be significant, and booking the least expensive available option without studying its location and features may not produce the experience you imagined.
Ocean view does not always mean beachfront
Some Mediterranean Village rooms have attractive ocean views, but the sea is farther away than listing photos may suggest. If direct beach access is your priority, select your building and category very carefully.
The resort is large
The two villages create variety, but they also make Sandals Grande Antigua a relatively large property. There can be considerable walking between your room, the beach, pools and certain restaurants.
Guests with mobility concerns—or anyone who simply wants everything close together—should pay particular attention to room location.
The main pool can be lively
The Mediterranean pool is a major attraction for social guests, but it may be more energetic than some couples want. Fortunately, quieter areas are available elsewhere on the property.
It is not the newest Sandals experience
If your priority is the newest suite design, cutting-edge architecture and a very polished contemporary aesthetic, Sandals Grande Antigua may not be your first choice.
Its appeal lies more in its exceptional beach, mature gardens, romantic atmosphere and range of accommodations.
However…there are newer room categories worth considering
That said, Sandals Grande Antigua does offer several newer room categories that feel brighter and more contemporary. My personal favourite is the Sunset Bluff Poolside Club Level Room (HL). Set on a bluff overlooking the resort, these rooms feature a fresh, calming design, a king-size bed, a modern bathroom with a walk-in shower and a private balcony. Second-floor rooms offer the best vantage point, with views across the pool, tropical gardens and Dickenson Bay. Club Level service also includes all-day in-room dining, access to the Club Sandals Lounge and assistance from the Club Sandals concierge team. For couples who love the atmosphere and beach at Sandals Grande Antigua but prefer a more updated room, this category offers an appealing balance.
Exploring Antigua beyond the resort
Antigua is worth exploring, even if you are staying at an all-inclusive resort.
Popular experiences include visiting Shirley Heights, Nelson’s Dockyard, Stingray City and some of the island’s many beaches. Catamaran cruises and island tours provide another way to experience Antigua’s coastline and history.
Shirley Heights is especially popular for its panoramic views, music and sunset atmosphere. A private or small-group island tour can combine it with several of Antigua’s other major sights.
Couples who divide their time between the resort and the island tend to come away with a much richer sense of the destination.
Who will love Sandals Grande Antigua?
This resort is particularly well suited to:
- Couples who consider the beach their top priority
- Honeymooners and anniversary travellers
- Guests who appreciate lush, established landscaping
- Travellers who want both lively and quiet pool options
- Couples who want a short airport transfer
- Sandals guests who prefer a traditional Caribbean atmosphere
- Travellers who enjoy exploring beyond the resort
Who may prefer another Sandals resort?
You may want to consider another option if:
- You only want a newly built or completely modern resort
- You dislike large properties or extensive walking
- You expect every ocean-view room to be directly beside the beach
- You want a completely private-feeling shoreline
- You would be disappointed by an older room design
None of these concerns automatically makes Sandals Grande Antigua the wrong choice. They simply make matching you with the correct room and resort location much more important.
Is Sandals Grande Antigua worth it?
For the right couple, absolutely.
Sandals Grande Antigua offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the Sandals portfolio, a wonderfully romantic setting, plenty of dining and pool choices, and an easy transfer from the airport. Its mix of tropical Caribbean charm and a livelier Mediterranean-style village allows couples to shape very different vacations within one resort.
Its weakness is inconsistency. The resort does not feel equally fresh in every area, and room descriptions alone do not always communicate how close—or how far—you will be from the beach.
I would recommend Sandals Grande Antigua most strongly to couples who value the beach and overall destination above having the newest room in the collection. I would also recommend choosing your room based on its precise location, not simply its service level or view label.
When the correct room is matched with the right expectations, it is easy to understand why so many guests keep returning to Antigua.
