If you’ve ever tried to book a Sandals Resort, there’s a good chance you’ve had this exact reaction:
Why are there so many room categories?
You might open the accommodations page expecting to choose between a standard room, an oceanview room and maybe a suite. Instead, you’re looking at names like Caribbean Deluxe, Beachfront Club Level Walkout, Honeymoon Oceanview Club Level, Swim-up Butler Suite and Rondoval Butler Villa with Private Pool.
And there can be dozens of them at a single resort.
It looks complicated, but there is actually a method to the madness.
Sandals Resorts has so many room categories because each category represents a particular combination of service level, location, view, room design and special features. Once you understand those pieces, the room list becomes much easier to decipher.
Here’s how Sandals room categories actually work — and why choosing the right one can make a significant difference to your vacation.
First: There Are Three Main Sandals Room Levels
The easiest place to start is with service level.
Every Sandals room falls into one of three main categories: Sandals Luxury, Club Sandals or Butler Elite.
Think of this as the foundation of the room category. After that, Sandals adds the room's location, view, layout and special features.
Sandals Luxury Level
Luxury Level is Sandals' entry-level room category.
But "entry level" can be slightly misleading because you're still staying at the same all-inclusive resort and enjoying the core Sandals inclusions.
Luxury rooms include an in-room minibar stocked with water, juice, soda, wine and local beer, along with daily housekeeping, nightly turndown service, Wi-Fi and airport transfers. They do not include in-room dining.
Luxury Level can be an excellent choice for couples who care more about the resort itself than having additional services attached to their room.
If you plan to spend your days at the beach, by the pool, scuba diving, exploring the island and enjoying the restaurants, you may not need to spend significantly more on your accommodations.
Club Sandals Level
Club Level is the next step up and is one of the most popular Sandals room categories.
The biggest difference is service.
Club Sandals guests receive access to the Club Sandals Concierge, Club Lounge and in-room dining from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Club rooms also include liquor in the in-room bar in addition to the beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages included at Luxury Level.
The concierge can also assist with restaurant reservations, spa appointments, excursions and other arrangements during your stay.
For many of my clients, Club Level is the sweet spot. You get some meaningful additional conveniences without necessarily making the jump to the price of a Butler Elite suite.
Butler Elite Level
Butler Elite is Sandals' highest service level.
These suites include personalized butler service along with 24-hour in-room dining. Your butler can assist with restaurant and activity reservations, serve food and drinks at the beach or pool, arrange meals from resort restaurants in your suite, help with luggage and take care of many of the little details throughout your stay.
Butler categories also tend to include some of Sandals' most impressive accommodations — think private pools, Skypools, Rondoval villas, expansive one-bedroom suites and other premium designs.
But here is where Sandals room categories start getting more interesting.
Service level is only one piece of the room name.
Then Sandals Adds the Location
Two rooms can have similar interiors and the exact same service level but be considered different categories because they are located in different parts of the resort.
This is particularly important at larger Sandals properties.
One room might be steps from the beach. Another could be tucked into the gardens. Another might sit high on a bluff with spectacular views but require more walking.
That can dramatically change the experience.
For example, someone who wants to walk directly from their patio toward the beach may have completely different priorities from someone who would happily climb a few stairs for a spectacular sunset view.
This is one reason I don't recommend choosing a Sandals room based solely on photographs of the room itself.
Where that room is located can matter just as much.
Then There Is the View
This is another reason Sandals ends up with so many room categories.
Depending on the resort, you may see descriptions such as:
- Gardenview
- Poolside
- Poolview
- Tropical Gardenview
- Partial Oceanview
- Oceanview
- Beachfront
- Oceanfront
Those descriptions aren't interchangeable.
A beautiful Club Level room overlooking the gardens may cost substantially less than a very similar room facing the ocean.
And importantly, "oceanview" and "beachfront" do not necessarily mean the same thing.
An oceanview room may have a gorgeous view of the Caribbean from farther back or higher within the resort. A beachfront category generally describes a room positioned much closer to the beach.
For some travellers, paying for that location is absolutely worth it.
For others, it isn't.
Walkout, Balcony or Upper Floor?
Now we add another variable.
Sandals often separates otherwise similar rooms depending on whether they have a balcony, patio or walkout location.
A walkout room generally allows you to step outside at ground level rather than accessing your outdoor space from an upper floor.
And then there are swim-up rooms.
A swim-up category gives you direct access to a pool from your patio, which can completely change how you use your room during the vacation.
This is also where personal preference becomes really important.
Some guests specifically want a ground-floor room because they don't want to deal with stairs. Others prefer the additional privacy or views that can come with an upper floor.
Neither is automatically "better."
The right one depends on you.
Then Come the Special Features
This is where the Sandals room list really starts to grow.
Sandals has developed a huge collection of distinctive accommodation styles across its resorts, and many of those features create entirely separate room categories.
Depending on the resort, you may encounter:
- Swim-up suites
- Private plunge pools
- Tranquility Soaking Tubs
- Skypool suites
- Rondoval villas
- One-bedroom suites
- Two-story villas
- Over-the-water bungalows
- Outdoor showers
- Separate living rooms
- Large terraces
- Private pool sanctuaries
Some newer Sandals resorts have taken this even further. At Sandals Dunn's River, for example, the Coyaba Villa Swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite includes a private pool sanctuary in addition to its distinctive Rondoval design and Butler Elite service.
Once you start combining these features with different views, buildings and service levels, it becomes easy to understand how one resort can end up with such a long accommodations list.
Why Are Sandals Room Names So Long?
This is actually the part that makes much more sense once you understand the system.
Sandals room names are essentially descriptions.
Take a hypothetical name like:
Honeymoon Beachfront Walkout Club Level Room with Patio Tranquility Soaking Tub
Instead of treating that as one enormous room name, break it into pieces.
"Honeymoon" may be part of the category name.
"Beachfront" tells you about its location or orientation.
"Walkout" tells you it's at ground level.
"Club Level" tells you the service tier.
"Patio Tranquility Soaking Tub" tells you about one of its special features.
Suddenly that ridiculously long room name is actually giving you quite a lot of information.
And one important side note: seeing the word "honeymoon" in a Sandals room category does not mean you have to be on your honeymoon to book it. It is often simply part of the accommodation name.
Is a More Expensive Sandals Room Always Better?
No — and this is probably the most important thing to understand when choosing a Sandals room.
More expensive does not automatically mean better for you.
I have clients who would choose a beachfront Luxury Level room over a more expensive Club Level room farther from the beach.
Some travellers would rather have an incredible ocean view than a swim-up pool.
Some couldn't care less about the view but absolutely want room service.
Others want the full Butler Elite experience and consider their suite a major part of the vacation.
The best Sandals room isn't necessarily the most expensive room you can afford.
It's the room that puts your money toward the things you will actually notice and enjoy.
Don't Assume the Room Code Tells the Whole Story
You'll also notice that Sandals assigns short codes to its room categories.
You may see codes such as CL, OJS, RPP or completely different combinations depending on the resort.
These codes are useful for identifying the exact category you're booking, but I wouldn't recommend trying to memorize them across the Sandals portfolio.
Instead, look at the full category description and, most importantly, the actual room details for that particular resort.
A category code doesn't tell you whether that room is ideally located for you, whether you'll have stairs to navigate, how private the patio feels or whether paying for the upgrade makes sense.
That's where knowing the individual resort becomes valuable.
How Do You Choose the Best Sandals Room Category?
Rather than starting with the room list, I recommend starting with your priorities.
Ask yourself:
Do I care about having room service?
Would I use a butler?
Is an ocean view important to me?
Do I want to be as close to the beach as possible?
Would I rather have a swim-up pool than a better view?
Do I want a balcony or a ground-floor walkout?
Is mobility a consideration?
Will we spend much time in the room?
Are we celebrating something where having an incredible suite is part of the experience?
And, of course: what do I actually want to spend?
Once I know those answers, I can usually eliminate a large portion of the room categories immediately.
That list of 20 or 30 possibilities might quickly become three or four rooms that genuinely make sense.
The Cheapest Sandals Room Isn't Always the Best Value
This is another distinction worth making.
Price and value aren't necessarily the same thing.
Sometimes moving up one room category costs relatively little and gives you a much better location, a better view or Club Level service.
Other times, the jump between categories can be significant — and I may tell a client that I don't think the upgrade is worth the money.
There are also certain room categories throughout the Sandals portfolio that I think offer particularly good value because of their location, layout or inclusions.
This is why I always compare the categories surrounding the room I'm considering rather than simply looking at the cheapest available option.

But choosing the resort is only half of the decision.
Choosing the right room within that resort can have a surprisingly big impact on your experience.
As a Sandals specialist, I look beyond the room photograph and category name. I'm considering where the room is located within the resort, the service level, whether it's a walkout or upper floor, its proximity to the beach and pools, the view, accessibility considerations and whether the upgrade from one category to another is actually worthwhile.
Sometimes I'll recommend the upgrade.
Sometimes I'll tell you to save your money.
The goal isn't to book the most expensive room.
It's to book the right Sandals room for the way you want to vacation.
The Bottom Line: Sandals Room Categories Aren't as Complicated as They Look
Yes, Sandals has a lot of room categories.
But that's because Sandals resorts aren't made up of hundreds of identical hotel rooms stacked inside one building.
Rooms can be spread across beaches, gardens, bluffs, villages and pools. They can have completely different views, layouts, outdoor spaces and service levels.
So when you see 20, 25 or even 30 room categories at one Sandals Resort, don't panic.
You don't really have 30 decisions to make.
You just need to figure out the handful of things that matter most to you.
