Your first Sandals vacation is exciting—but it can also come with plenty of questions.

Should you make a detailed itinerary? How many restaurants can you realistically try? Which activities need to be booked in advance? And how do you make the most of everything included without returning home in need of another vacation?

Some of the best advice comes from travellers who have visited Sandals Resorts repeatedly. Here are the tips experienced Sandals guests wish they had known before their first stay.

Do Not Try to Do Everything

There is a lot happening at a Sandals Resort. Between the restaurants, pools, water sports, entertainment, excursions and activities, it can be tempting to fill every day.

But this is still your vacation.

You do not have to attend every event, eat at every restaurant or experience every activity during one trip. Leave space for slow mornings, long afternoons by the pool and spontaneous plans.

You may even discover that your favourite memories are the unplanned ones: taking a walk along the beach, lingering over dinner or ordering another drink because you have nowhere else to be.

Take Advantage of What Is Included

Sandals includes much more than accommodations, meals and drinks. Depending on the resort and local conditions, guests may also have access to activities such as:

  • Snorkelling excursions
  • Kayaking
  • Paddleboarding
  • Hobie Cats
  • Glass-bottom boat tours
  • Land sports
  • Fitness classes
  • Evening entertainment
  • Scuba diving for certified divers

Visit the resort’s water sports or Aqua Centre early in your stay to ask what is available and whether reservations are required. Some activities have limited departure times or spaces, so waiting until the end of the week could mean missing out.

Try More Than One Dish

One of the pleasures of staying at an all-inclusive resort is having the freedom to try something new.

If two appetizers catch your attention, you can order both. If you cannot decide between two entrées, ask whether you can sample them. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover a dish you may not normally order at home.

You can also ask for smaller portions when available or share additional dishes with your partner.

Make Restaurant Reservations Early

Most Sandals restaurants do not require reservations, but certain popular or specialty dining experiences may.

Once you arrive, confirm which restaurants require reservations and book your preferred evenings early. If you are staying in a Club Level or Butler Elite room, your concierge or butler can assist.

You do not need to plan every meal in advance, however. Leaving a few evenings open gives you the freedom to return to a favourite restaurant or decide based on what you feel like eating that day.

Do Not Overpack

The Caribbean is wonderfully casual, and no one is keeping track of how often you wear the same sundress or linen shirt.

Bring comfortable resort wear, swimsuits, sun protection and a few outfits suitable for the restaurants. Some dining venues have particular dress expectations, so check the current requirements for your resort before packing.

You probably do not need a different pair of shoes for every evening. Save that suitcase space for sunscreen, medications and the things that genuinely make your vacation more comfortable.

Experience More Than the Resort

Sandals Resorts are designed to make it very easy to stay on property for the entire week—but the islands themselves are worth discovering.

Consider setting aside at least one day to explore your destination. Depending on the island, that might mean visiting a waterfall, taking a catamaran cruise, wandering through a historic town, snorkelling offshore or enjoying lunch at a local restaurant.

Each Caribbean island has its own culture, landscape and personality. Getting beyond the resort can add an entirely different dimension to your vacation.

Book excursions through a reputable provider, understand what is included and give yourself enough time to return to the resort comfortably.

Consider Having Professional Photos Taken

Sandals photographers are available for couples who want to capture something more polished than phone photos and vacation selfies.

A sunset session can be especially worthwhile for a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone celebration. You can view the images afterward and decide which ones you would like to purchase.

There is no obligation to purchase the photos; you can choose to buy just one.

Keep Online Reviews in Perspective

Reviews can help you understand a resort, but they rarely tell the entire story. Opinions may be influenced by room location, weather, expectations and personal travel style.

Two guests can stay at the same property during the same week and have completely different experiences. I see this all the time with clients, which is why choosing the right resort is so important (I have a quiz for that!).

This is one reason working with a Sandals specialist can be so valuable. The goal is not simply to book a well-reviewed resort—it is to select the right resort, island and room category for your priorities.

Speak Up If Something Is Not Right

If you experience a problem during your stay, give the resort an opportunity to address it while you are there.

Start with the appropriate person, whether that is your butler, the Club Sandals concierge, the front desk or resort management. Take photos when relevant and explain clearly what resolution you are hoping for.

If you booked through a travel advisor, contact them as well. Your advisor may be able to help escalate the concern and communicate with resort management on your behalf.

Waiting until you return home can make it much harder for anyone to correct the issue.

Ask About Rebooking Before You Leave

If you fall in love with Sandals and are already thinking about your next vacation, visit the resort’s Loyalty & Travel desk before checking out.

On-resort booking offers may provide savings or other advantages for a future Sandals or Beaches vacation. Before confirming, make sure the booking is associated with your existing travel advisor so they can continue managing it, helping with future promotions and supporting you throughout the process.

You can enjoy the benefits of securing your next stay while maintaining the advisor relationship you already trust.

The Most Important Tip: Make the Vacation Your Own

Some couples wake up early, join every activity and explore from morning until night. Others order breakfast, find the perfect pool chairs and barely move all day.

Neither approach is wrong.

Your Sandals vacation does not have to look like someone else’s trip. Take advantage of what matters to you, skip what does not and give yourself permission to slow down.

You do not need to experience everything during your first visit. After all, there is a very good chance it will not be your last.
